Go the Green WayGREEN travel is still on the agenda, with the travel industry continuing to inject billions of dollars into research and new technologies to reduce negative impacts to the environment.

The demand for sustainable and responsible tourism has seen travel companies such as Student Flights become even more environmentally responsive to the green movement.

For the past two years, Student Flights’ carbon offsetting initiative with Australia’s top carbon solutions provider Cleaner Climate has seen many travellers reinvest emissions from flights back into a global renewable energy project.

Eco-volunteer programs that restore damaged environments, save the wildlife and modernise local communities have become a popular choice for travellers who wish to leave their green print.

Some of the volunteer programs offered by Student Flights are listed below.

SAVE THE TURTLES IN COSTA RICA

See endangered turtles come out of their shell as you assist in a turtle rescue project along Costa Rica's Pacific coast. There are two projects available that engage with two species of turtle – the Baula Turtles and Olive Ridley Turtles. Volunteers will help out with patrolling and clearing the beaches, preparing and relocating turtle nests, helping to release baby turtles, and recording total number of eggs and turtles.

Prices start from $1119* per person and includes five days’ volunteering at sea turtle conservation project, 14 nights accommodation, horseback riding, transportation from Monteverde to La Fortuna, a guided visit to Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve and many meals.

This tour is valid for sale until July 18, 2010 and valid for travel from July 1, 2010 to November 30, 2011.

PROJECT TANZANIA


LEND a hand at local school in the Magara village as a volunteer on this nine-day trip in Tanzania from Student Flights. Volunteers will spend four days on the community project, working on the general refurbishment of classroom facilities and water suppliers for the school, followed by three days on a wildlife safari. Sightseeing highlights along the way include the famous Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge the diverse game parks of Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park.

The trip is priced from $2690* per person and includes eight nights camping, all meals, transport by private vehicles and 4WD, the four-day volunteer project, national park fees, a bilingual guide, sightseeing activities and support staff. All camping equipment, materials for the community project and a group medical kit are included in the price.

The trip is scheduled to depart on September 7, 2010 and is valid for sale at Student Flights until August 30, 2010 unless sold out prior.
